Skype Beta Now Available To Nokia S60 Mobile Phones!

And no, we’re not talking about Skype Lite here, but about a real native-code version of Skype which has hit yesterday beta for S60 3.1 and 3.2-based devices. The app supports free Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G or WiFi, instant messaging, and file transfers. The initial set of devices it works with is still limited, but Skype promises that it will grow quickly. You can download here Skype Beta for Symbian v3

Skype has been expanding its footprint to most of the major smartphone platforms over the last year or so. It was included on the Nokia N97 when the device launched, but lagged behind with no support for Nokia’s main smartphone platform, S60 3rd Edition. Today, Skype announced a beta version of its software for S60 3rd Edition phones.

On the feature side of things, Skype for Symbian supports:

* Free Skype-to-Skype calling
* Call phones with Skype credits or subscription
* Receive calls on your Online Number
* Instant Messaging
* Group conversations
* File sending and receiving

This beta release of Skype for Symbian supports 17 different phones. Skype says the production release is planned to be compatible with a larger number of devices, and is expected in early 2010.

Skype for Symbian supports the following S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 devices: E71, E63, E66, N82, E51, N95, N95 8GB, N81, N81 8GB, and the E90.

Skype for Symbian supports the following S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 devices: N96, N85, 5320, 6210 Navigator, 6210 Classic, N78, and N79

Remember: Skype for Symbian works over both Wi-Fi and 3G data connections and the application itself is available for free. You won’t have any excuse any more if after that you still manage to blow-up your monthly contract fee and piss-off your banker…

seen in the news: happy like a gummibear in a microwave

[singlepic id=137 w=150 h=150 float=right]I’m not sure what to think about this article I read today on BBC News. Even the title scared me:  “anti-Wi-Fi paint keeps your wireless signal to yourself.  I’m myself a fan of technology and innovations which can help us improve our every day’s life. However I don’t know if this anti wi-fi paint really “offers security” as stated by the BBC. Continue Reading →

Cheap VoIP telephony using Sipdroid

Hello all,

Nicolas was kind enough to invite me to share my experiences with mobile VoIP, specifically with Sipdroid on the Android platform. I’ll start by providing a quick summary of the technology, and how applications are now utilizing it.

bonhomme-androidSimply speaking, VoIP – short for Voice-over-IP – is a general term for technologies which route phone calls over the internet, rather than regular telephony networks. The result is very cheap telephony, or in the case of pure internet-to-internet communications, free telephony. Continue Reading →

Save Nabaztag: because we don’t like to see bunnies die

nabaztag_tag_blogLets be honest. You wouldn’t normally associate bunny rabbits with cutting-edge technology and superior intelligence.
Of course there was that time Bugs Bunny outwitted Marvin the Martian using an Aludium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator but we’re talking real-life here! Maybe that’s why thousands of fans worldwide have been utterly gobsmacked by Nabaztag/tag. Derived from the Armenian word for rabbit, this ingenious Wi-Fi-enabled bunny has revolutionned the way Wi-Fi fans receive information about… well, about anything! Continue Reading →

Airline Wi-Fi: All U.S. services compared by Dvice.com

onboard wifi? you're not aloneWant to surf the Internet while you’re on a plane? You’re not alone — there’s a growing demand for in-flight Wi-Fi, and the airlines are stepping up to meet it. Currently there are three separate services — Gogo, Row 44 and LiveTV — that provide Wi-Fi on planes in U.S. airspace, and which ones that are available to you depends on your airline.

What are the differences between them? How much do they cost? And what can you do with that connection? Kevin Hall at Device.com talked to reps from all three services, putting together all the information in a handy table. Continue Reading →

mobile phone invoice: “What’s the butcher’s bill for this month?”

?Here we are again: the beginning of a new month with its procession of  bills of all kinds, falling around just like the dead leafs of some trees. Mmmm, a little foretaste of Falls @ the beginning of August…

I though just realized today, while checking my online mobile phone bills of the last three month, that I actually managed not to overrun my monthly fee! And that’s the first time since 2006!

So where’s the trick? Continue Reading →

“they wanna make a supersonic man out of me”: Surfing the web at the speed of sound (well, almost…)

Fahrenheit”.

I think this is how in-flight ISPs Aircell, Row 44 or OnAir should have called their piece of hardware they supplied airlines with. But I doubt that their engineers were whistling Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” while working on their solution… or is it because it’s still light-years away from being something decently called “broadband Internet”? who knows… Continue Reading →

1,000 forks when all u need is a spoon…

I’m sitting here in the airport lobby, awaiting for my bi-monthly flight which will take me to Vienna, and I just realized that there is approximately one electric plug per sqm here! Crazy when you know that one has to struggle hours in Vienna’s Intl Airport to find just one. Life’s so unfair when you’re running out of battery.

But Vienna has at least free wifi (4 free wifi access vs none in Paris)…We have the plugs, you got the wifi :P

Turn you mobile phone into a secured Wifi hotspot for your laptop!

200562725-001Who has never looked with envy at those people surfing the web on their laptop, from the gate of an airport or while travelling on board of a train?

Who has never been discouraged to purchase a 30mns Internet credit for €15 from the only local provider available at an airport lounge or at a hotel?

As for my part, I’ve experienced both situations during one of the 140 Paris-Vienna flights I took for the past two years (17,5 tonnes of CO2 … I know… I’m so ashamed). But I’ve never been so desperate to subscribe to an additional mobile contract for 12 or 24 month and get one of those “cool” broadband Internet access USB dongles you connect to your PC or Mac and which puts the world at your finger tips while on the move… Continue Reading →

Design, wifi and café latte…

cafe-moebel-viennaIf you’re planning to spend some days in Vienna and if you’re tired of reading your emails or working out your next powerpoint presentation from an impersonal hotel lobby, the cafe Moebel is just the perfect place for you: this cute little café is central, quiet, the food is good (they make a delicious café latte!), they have a free broadband Internet wifi access, waiters and waitress are nice and last but not least, its interior is 100% design! All the furniture, seats, tables, lamps, etc. come directly from the famous design shop Das Moebel located a few blocks from the café itself. The shop showcases design creations by WerK, franz maurer, moor&moor, moca, mm interier, ellips and more others!

So if you fall in love with anything here in particular, you can just satisfy your need for design and good taste a few hundred meters down the street…

Personally I could not afford one single piece of furniture which is displayed here in this living showroom; but I can at least spend the day sitting on one of those €800 seats and spoil this beautiful €1,500 table I’m working on…
