From theory to practice: Can an iPad Replace Your Laptop for Business Travel?

That is a good question. Some say yes, and some say yes/no. Most agree to say that it depends on what kind of professional you are, in which industry you work, and what are your needs when it comes to productivity (wow, what a surprise… I would have never figured that out on my own).

In my case (as a “veteran” nomad worker), that’s exactly what I’m going to figure out during a week, starting today. Even though I’m quite tempted to take my netbook with me as a back-up in case the iPad is not up to my expectations (and to prevent being stuck in Vienna with nothing to do but writing down “to do lists” of all the “must-do” things I could “not-do” with my iPad), I’ll fully play the game.
I guess I will (just in case…) take a USB drive with all my favorite apps on it, bookmarks and settings. But I’m not even sure where I could get a laptop to use it anyway…

My expected tasks for the next five days might include:

  • Email checking (I guess that will be no issue with the iPad’s email client)
  • Document editing (PlainText shall be enough when offline, but I’ll definitely stay in the “Cloud” whenever possible – like by using Google Doc every time I need to create a Word/Excel-like document. As for Pdf documents, I’ll try Stanza for iPad)
  • Access documents stored in the cloud (no prob: dropbox for iPad)
  • Basic image editing (screen captures, create mock-ups, crop, resize, etc)
  • twalaba‘s platform testing and debugging on Safari
  • Stay in touch with the “outer world” thanks to Skype for iPad
  • Unexpected urgent-must-do tasks…

By judging to this list of regular day-to-day to-do tasks, the use of my iPad will tightly be connected to the “Cloud”. When you have a 16 Gb iPad2, having all your documents dematerialized and available online, is a real relief. You save a bunch of storage (I’d rather keep for iTunes…) and you know that wherever you are, and whatever happens, all documents you created are “safe”.

As for where to get an internet connection, Vienna, as major cities in Europe, is a perfectly “connected” city: you will get a free WiFi connection almost anywhere (Cafés, restaurants, Starbucks, MacDonald, etc). In my case, I don’t worry to much about whether I’ll get an internet connection or not: wherever I’ll stay, I will be able to connect my iPad2 to the cloud through my Nokia N900 + Joiku Spot’s app. I just must not forget to pack a few extra batteries for my Nokia phone as turning a smartphone into a secured Wifi hotspot, drains batteries quite fast. As for the autonomy of the iPad, I don’t worry too much: apparently, an intensive use of the iPad (while connected to the Internet) should leave me enough time to complete a full day at work before having to worry to look somewhere for a plug. Let’s now see how it behaves in the wilderness of the city…

… while I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I won’t bump into too much “Flash” during my journey.

Boarding Pass Fail and Beautiful Designs

boarding pass in wallet

Every once in a while a designer will come across somthing ugly and feel the need to do something about it. So it was with Squarespace Creative Director Tyler Thompson, who late last year found himself aesthetically offended by the mess that is a Delta Airlines boarding pass. Continue Reading →

Need electric power? Then, move your butt!

empowerchair550

Some time ago I wrote about this issue many of us unfortunately already faced once or regularly face when traveling by plane: the scarce number of electric plugs in airports.

As you might imagine, most airports were built long before we were all carrying around all kinds of electronic devices, and as such, finding a place to charge them up can turn today into a real challenge. I expect many of us have snooped around for the outlets the airport cleaners use or that operate vending machines (that’s bad!) so we can plug in and charge up our laptop or cellphone during a stopover. Some of us may eventually have ended-up charging their device in the bathroom. But that’s another story I guess…

So, unless airports management decide to undertake a costly reorganization of their infrastructure or implement a wireless power solution – which won’t be made available tomorrow to the many – , the problem may last some time.

The question is, “shall we cry on our cruel fate and accept that?”. I think we shall not!

Designer Ryan Klinger has identified this big flaw and has created the Empower Kinetic Rocking Chair which harnesses your body movements to provide power for your devices. A small box under the seat stores the generated power in a battery, which can then transfer into your devices using either a regular plug or USB. LED indicators on the box tell you how much of a charge the battery is holding.
So simple you wonder why nobody came up with this idea earlier.

The Empower Kinetic Rocking Chair is a finalist in this year’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition. Let’s hope it will win and start blooming everywhere we need to plug.

Coffee break: a cookie friendly cup holder

One dilemma we  sometimes face when we’re having one cup of our favourite coffee or tea (in one hand) while browsing the Internet at the same time (with the other hand) is how to also have a bite of this delicious cookie (or brownie, or whatever sweet cake or biscuit) or a smoke of your cigarette – which by the way is much less healthy than this 464kCal cookie. But unless a third arm grows overnight, you won’t be able to perform those three tasks at the same time…

… until today! Thanks to this Clean Cup holder by Dmitry Boyko, you’ll always be able to do some multi-tasking even during your coffee break!

[nggallery id=36]

According to Long Tran of Yanko Design, the “Clean Cup holder slides onto most disposable cups instantly turning them into a proper mug. You can even write on the neck so people know what you’re drinking and who it belongs to.”

A cool design that somehow reminds me of Joe Colombo’s ‘smoke glass’ (1964). Only a strange coincidence, I guess.

Every designers’ dirty little secret is that they copy other designers’ work. They see work they like, and they imitate it. Rather cheekily, they call this inspiration.

Coffee break: Come on and stir it up

One of the big dilemma I often face when I drink a cup of coffee  is to know what to do with the spoon I use to stir it (I like it with milk and sugar). This wouldn’t be an issue if I drank my coffee in a regular coffee-cup and its saucer where I could drop my spoon once I used it. But I am more of a mug-man than a granny-like-styled coffee drinker. Damn! Why can’t I do things like normal people do?!

Until today I then just had the choice between spoiling my desk with a dirty and sticky spoon or stick it in my eye every time I had a sip of my coffee.

Fortunately for me (and my ophthalmologist) there’s now a solution. Two young French designers created quite a clever “self-stirring cup” than can be used either for tea or coffee (I say). It’s a glass, actually, and it has a ceramic ball at the bottom that moves around and mixes the tea (or coffee!) as you lift the cup or swirl it gently. For those of you, who like me, hate or can’t afford losing time stirring their coffee with their two hands, this cup is revolutionary.

Last but not least, the base of the glass protrudes enough so that when you lift the glass to drink, the ball never falls out and hits you in the teeth or end up in your stomach. Clever.

Who said that drinking coffee was a safe activity? Even George seems to have issues when it comes to resupplying in his nearest Nespresso shop.

My advice: You should try and order online next time.

Recommended reading – Invoice Like A Pro: Examples and Best Practices [by Smashing Magazine]

Should you be a freelancer or the general manager of a big company, there are a few things about invoicing you should know or at least reconsider. Drafting an invoice for your beloved (or not) client should not only be a mere action of putting figures together to come up with a big number. They also act as a proof of your professionalism and thus require that you follow some general guidelines.

Smashing Magazine reviewed some great (and not so great) online invoicing tools, so that you can spend less time creating invoices and more time doing the things you love!

Remember that if you spent so much time and money designing your business card, which is somehow the first creative and useful thing you’ll give your client or prospect, invoices are the last thing you may exchange with them and thus just deserve the same attention and care for their design. Make them impacting and have fun designing them.

Portable Map Projector Concept

Maptor is an innovative portable map projector concept by Jin-Sun Park and Seon-Keun Park that promises to eliminate the need for paper maps.

Equipped with GPS and a small projector, Maptor allows the user to display map on almost any surface and view their current location. It somehow reminds me the mobile phone with embedded GPS which displays arrows on the ground in “Microsoft’s vision to the future”.

Creating a concept is nice, turning it into reality is even better.

1,000 forks when all u need is a spoon…

I’m sitting here in the airport lobby, awaiting for my bi-monthly flight which will take me to Vienna, and I just realized that there is approximately one electric plug per sqm here! Crazy when you know that one has to struggle hours in Vienna’s Intl Airport to find just one. Life’s so unfair when you’re running out of battery.

But Vienna has at least free wifi (4 free wifi access vs none in Paris)…We have the plugs, you got the wifi :P

Design, wifi and café latte…

cafe-moebel-viennaIf you’re planning to spend some days in Vienna and if you’re tired of reading your emails or working out your next powerpoint presentation from an impersonal hotel lobby, the cafe Moebel is just the perfect place for you: this cute little café is central, quiet, the food is good (they make a delicious café latte!), they have a free broadband Internet wifi access, waiters and waitress are nice and last but not least, its interior is 100% design! All the furniture, seats, tables, lamps, etc. come directly from the famous design shop Das Moebel located a few blocks from the café itself. The shop showcases design creations by WerK, franz maurer, moor&moor, moca, mm interier, ellips and more others!

So if you fall in love with anything here in particular, you can just satisfy your need for design and good taste a few hundred meters down the street…

Personally I could not afford one single piece of furniture which is displayed here in this living showroom; but I can at least spend the day sitting on one of those €800 seats and spoil this beautiful €1,500 table I’m working on…
