mobile phone invoice: “What’s the butcher’s bill for this month?”

?Here we are again: the beginning of a new month with its procession of  bills of all kinds, falling around just like the dead leafs of some trees. Mmmm, a little foretaste of Falls @ the beginning of August…

I though just realized today, while checking my online mobile phone bills of the last three month, that I actually managed not to overrun my monthly fee! And that’s the first time since 2006!

So where’s the trick? Continue Reading →

Nokia’s new website helps globetrotters travel green

One of the main reasons why people should work from home, is because it is environment friendly. Everyday, hundred of millions of commuters wordlwide take their car to drive to their office instead of using public transportation or work from home, and participate to spreading in the air millions of tons of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases strongly related to global warming.

Today, more and more “socially responsible” companies are launching new environmental programs – not all of them are only meant to act as some nice PR or advertising for those companies -  to try to make things change. They aren’t revolutionnary, as every one of them is more like a stone which helps build the big wall which at the end will give the big picture. But at least, they help.

Nokia has launched beginning of December, a great green travel resource that is up in beta mode called Green Explorer.  It features travel news, eco-centered information about destinations, tips from fellow green travelers, easy carbon offsets, mobile device access, and loads more.

According to Jaymi Heimbuch on treehugger, this resource “is geared specifically for people who want to travel in an eco-friendly fashion and provide their own travel tips, and the site has quite a few features that can make it a top resource when it comes out of beta”

And for those of us who are dyed in the wool environment lovers who can’t stand the idea of leaving a Big-Foot environmental print every time they fly, Nokia has developped the world’s first CO2 emission offsetting tool to your mobile: we:offset. It’s already available in 46 languages.

Pixalize me I’m famous!

Mexico City, March 13th 2009 (GMT -6h) – Here I am, finally, on the tierra del Tequila, after a 12 hours chaotic flight spent in the middle of a group of french rednecks. Although the flight was ok, the temptation to bail them out over the North Atlantic Ocean was really hard to resist…  but I managed to make it there and even to survive the Mexican customs!

So I’m now here standing in front of the luggage carousel, waiting for my suitcase together with the other 450 passengers of my flight…

Despite the fact that we have accepted nowadays the need to traverse shoeless, beltless and beverageless through airport security, most of us still can’t stave off baggage carousel gridlock by bringing along anything other than a black roller bag. I’m among the guilty who assumes that my beat-up Samsonite stands out due to a few strands of green yarn I’ve affixed to the handle. Continue Reading →

“they wanna make a supersonic man out of me”: Surfing the web at the speed of sound (well, almost…)

Fahrenheit”.

I think this is how in-flight ISPs Aircell, Row 44 or OnAir should have called their piece of hardware they supplied airlines with. But I doubt that their engineers were whistling Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” while working on their solution… or is it because it’s still light-years away from being something decently called “broadband Internet”? who knows… Continue Reading →

Microsoft’s vision of the future: a highly collaborative, interactive and mobile world

students2Two schoolgirls from distant countries communicate using a clear white board that can do on-the-fly translation. A business man finds his way out of the airport to meet with his client, by following the big arrow displayed on the ground by his mobile built-in GPS. Working partners meet in a café and resume the project they’re working on, from the very surface of the table. Sounds familiar to you? Continue Reading →

Cool computer cases (because your laptop is worth it)

mynerdThis is my laptop. There are many like it but this one is mine. My laptop is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my laptop is useless. Without my laptop I am useless. Let’s go to Moscow. Find the backdoor to the Kremlin and come on in, singing ‘Howdy Owdy Doody How Doody Aye Ey”

extract from the unpublished Secret Oath of the Digital Native

One of the major concerns of the telecommuter or urban nomad, is to keep the electronic devices he or she uses in his/her day-to-day life, safe.

I’m not talking here about how to prevent those devices from being hacked or stolen, but how to make sure that they survive their 24/7 journey between places such as airports, offices, transportations, or cafés. Continue Reading →

Nimbuzz : the killer VoIP app for mobile phones

If you’re like me and split most of your “online time” between your smartphone, your computer’s chat client and your Facebook/LinkedIn page, Nimbuzz may be for you. It’ll make all those communications smoother.

My Facebook friends sometimes leave me wall messages that I take forever to respond to when I’m running between Paris and Vienna. Now they can call me or chat with me directly via a widget embedded on my Facebook profile page. The Nimbuzz widget detects presence and shows if I’m online. If I’m offline, Nimbuzz also includes a “Buzz” feature to alert me that people are trying to reach me. Continue Reading →

Design, wifi and café latte…

cafe-moebel-viennaIf you’re planning to spend some days in Vienna and if you’re tired of reading your emails or working out your next powerpoint presentation from an impersonal hotel lobby, the cafe Moebel is just the perfect place for you: this cute little café is central, quiet, the food is good (they make a delicious café latte!), they have a free broadband Internet wifi access, waiters and waitress are nice and last but not least, its interior is 100% design! All the furniture, seats, tables, lamps, etc. come directly from the famous design shop Das Moebel located a few blocks from the café itself. The shop showcases design creations by WerK, franz maurer, moor&moor, moca, mm interier, ellips and more others!

So if you fall in love with anything here in particular, you can just satisfy your need for design and good taste a few hundred meters down the street…

Personally I could not afford one single piece of furniture which is displayed here in this living showroom; but I can at least spend the day sitting on one of those €800 seats and spoil this beautiful €1,500 table I’m working on…
