I remember the time when cell phones where only used for their mobile telephony features and mostly used to look like this:

Bottle concept by Henning R. Nielsen

A conceptual design by Henning R. Nielsen, a 24 years old student in industrial design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, for a PLA thermo bottle in the year of 2015 – The year when producers and packaging associations expect prize stabilization of bioplastics. This biodegradable 0.4l plastic bottle has two tear-off spoons on the outer hard shell and is designed for people on the go, who prefer a liquid diet of soup or eat their favorite yogurt anywhere… Continue Reading →
Mobilis in mobili* (my 252° Tetris like mini house)
From French designers Stephanie Bellanger, Amaury Watine, François Gustin & David Dethoor comes the Mobile Mini House, an ingenious trailer prototype which expans into a five-rooms mobile appartment and folds like a wooden fan when you’re on-the-go.
Unfurled into a 252° semicircle, the Mobile Mini reveals five modular rooms that cover your needs for a bed, bath, living room, kitchen and even an office. Cutouts in all of the walls allow for the various bits to interlock when it’s folded up, and, unfolded, there’s a transparent screen that pulls out to act as the roof and walls.
Even if some parts of this trailer are at an early age of development and raise some questions (“where does the huge floor comes from? Does it overlaps with the rest of the structure or is it towed in a separate trailer? What hapens with theplumbing, water or waste tanks on movable walls? How is the whole structure cooled down in summer/heated in winter? Will it be possible to have an opaque sliding screen instead of the see-trough one?”), the idea per se is really interesting and deserves funding for further development and eventually a mass production for the consumer market (nomads and nature lovers, raise your hand!).

iPhone killer…
Sadly just a design study and not something which will be announced this year at any major consumer electronic events, this Nokia E97 Envelop is the work of 23 year-old Paris student, Fabien Nauroy. The concept has a full keyboard in “AZERTY” layout, with a small LCD screen above the keyboard. But the best part is the pull-out LED screen that can work as a storage device, and make file and picture sharing somewhat retro, and also futuristic. Continue Reading →
“they wanna make a supersonic man out of me”: Surfing the web at the speed of sound (well, almost…)
“Fahrenheit”.
I think this is how in-flight ISPs Aircell, Row 44 or OnAir should have called their piece of hardware they supplied airlines with. But I doubt that their engineers were whistling Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” while working on their solution… or is it because it’s still light-years away from being something decently called “broadband Internet”? who knows… Continue Reading →
Microsoft’s vision of the future: a highly collaborative, interactive and mobile world
Two schoolgirls from distant countries communicate using a clear white board that can do on-the-fly translation. A business man finds his way out of the airport to meet with his client, by following the big arrow displayed on the ground by his mobile built-in GPS. Working partners meet in a café and resume the project they’re working on, from the very surface of the table. Sounds familiar to you? Continue Reading →
2017: take your office cubicle at home
This month, Wired has pictured what could look like our – take away? – office cubicle in the future
Is it so hard to imagine that this tiny pebble-like device may be our tomorrow’s workstation ? We’ll probably have the technology by 2017 to develop this kind of gizmo, but to have it enforced – socially speaking – in every offices is another story…
For the past six years, Wired magazine’s Found page has presented some of the best guess at what our world will look like in 10, 20 or 100 years. This captivating monthly exercise in futurism organized by the editorial team and Wired’s readers has regularly brought outstanding results as Found has turned into one of the most plebiscited pages of the magazine. the day we were replaced by better looking Holographic Virtual Assistants…
Well, according to the news it seems that we’re about to! PDM, an Australian Digital media company launched today the country’s first ever life-size ‘Holographic Virtual Assistant’ at Audi Centre Sydney, Rosebery which is designed “to facilitate enhanced communication and customer experience” as it is supposed to be smart enough to answer questions that customers may have. Let’s hope it won’t quickly turn into this :
For the record, Best Buy developed last year a similar concept and showcased it on some of its malls
Whatever happens, I can’t wait to see this technology made available to the consumer market so that I can have my own virtual me sitting at my desk when I’m telecommuting
Design, wifi and café latte…
If you’re planning to spend some days in Vienna and if you’re tired of reading your emails or working out your next powerpoint presentation from an impersonal hotel lobby, the cafe Moebel is just the perfect place for you: this cute little café is central, quiet, the food is good (they make a delicious café latte!), they have a free broadband Internet wifi access, waiters and waitress are nice and last but not least, its interior is 100% design! All the furniture, seats, tables, lamps, etc. come directly from the famous design shop Das Moebel located a few blocks from the café itself. The shop showcases design creations by WerK, franz maurer, moor&moor, moca, mm interier, ellips and more others!
So if you fall in love with anything here in particular, you can just satisfy your need for design and good taste a few hundred meters down the street…
Personally I could not afford one single piece of furniture which is displayed here in this living showroom; but I can at least spend the day sitting on one of those €800 seats and spoil this beautiful €1,500 table I’m working on…

Strikes in France: a normal working day from home
In my previous post “my 50th week of teleworking” I did not think relevant to highlight one additional market accelerators identified by Gartner, which may influence the growth of teleworking worldwide: the notion of “”emergency teleworkers”. According to some US analysts, “continued or increasing political unrest, particularly where it includes a possible threat to the security of those in areas of greatest population and business density”, may influence the development of teleworking practice. How is that? Continue Reading →
